Thunder Valley is the coordinating agency for the Pine Ridge Promise Zone initiative. Thunder Valley is a nonprofit organization located on the Pine Ridge Reservation that works to empower Lakota youth and families to improve the health, culture, and environment of our communities through the healing and strengthening of cultural identity.
The Oglala Sioux Tribe supported the Promise Zone application that was submitted by Thunder Valley and will play a critical role in the Pine Ridge Promise Zone initiative. The Oglala Sioux Tribe is a federally-recognized tribe of approximately 48,000 members. Tribal headquarters are located in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.
USDA has assigned a local federal liaison to the Pine Ridge Promise Zone initiative that will help tribal partners navigate federal programs and assist in communicating our Promise Zone strategies and priorities to other federal partners.
The VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) program will supply five full-time volunteers to help build the capacity of local organizations in the Pine Ridge Promise Zone.
